Nation Preparation

The lights go out. Everywhere.

Would your household know what to do?

Most of us wouldn’t. Only 14% of UK adults say they have a household plan, and half feel only slightly or not at all prepared. Start with one page for the fridge door. It’s free.

The video was a dramatisation. Britain has never had a nationwide power cut, and it’s rare. Local cuts, floods and storms happen every year. Survey figures: UK Public Survey of Risk Perception, Resilience and Preparedness 2026 (Cabinet Office).

The card covers the first ten minutes. Steady covers the next three days.

Household Pack, £14: the 77-page manual, printables to fill in, 4 laminate-ready cards and the fridge card. 30-day refund. Founding price until 23 November 2026, then £19.

Check your household in one minute

Six quick questions about the first hour of a power cut or a burst pipe. Nothing is stored or sent: your answers stay on this page.

1. Could you find a torch or lantern in the dark without using your phone?
2. Does everyone at home know where the water stopcock, the fuse box and the gas shut-off are?
3. Do you have a charged power bank, or another way to charge your phone for a few days?
4. Do you know the number to call for a power cut?
5. Do you have some drinking water stored, and food that needs no cooking?
6. Do you have a written plan with a meeting point and who checks on whom?

General information, not a risk rating. Nation Preparation is independent and not connected with the UK Government. In an emergency call 999.

The card covers the first ten minutes.

Steady covers the next three days.

It’s not the big, rare things that catch people out. It’s the ordinary ones:

  • The power’s off, it’s dark at 5pm, and the boiler won’t start.
  • A flood warning arrives at 2am. What do you move first?
  • The card machine’s down and you’ve got no cash.
  • Your mum’s on her own, the phones are patchy, and you can’t get through.

None of it is complicated. It’s just hard to work out from scratch, in the dark, while everyone’s asking you what to do.

The manual

Steady: the UK household resilience manual

77 pages of calm, practical steps for UK homes. Read it once, fill in the plans, and keep it in a kitchen drawer.

After one afternoon with Steady, you’ll know:

  • What to do in the first few minutes, and how to talk to the children about it (Ch 1)
  • The real risks where you live, from a 20-minute check using free UK tools (Ch 2)
  • What your household needs for three days, room by room, with a shopping plan that spreads the cost (Ch 3)
  • How much water to keep, and what to do when the taps stop (Ch 4)
  • The first hour, first night and first three days of a power cut, including when you’re owed compensation (Ch 5)
  • What weather and flood warnings actually ask you to do, and how to protect an insurance claim (Ch 6)
  • Winter, heatwaves and getting stuck in the car (Ch 7)
  • A calm plan for the rare, big events, if the whole country is affected (Ch 8)

Steady is for you if…

you run a household, look after someone, or just want to know you’ve got it covered without making it your hobby.

It isn’t…

a prepper book. No bunkers, no stockpiles, no scary scenarios. Just the UK numbers, plans and checklists you’d want on a bad night.

Why a plan beats more kit

Most homes already have torches somewhere. What they don’t have is:

  • the torch where you can find it in the dark
  • the numbers on paper, for when the phone’s flat
  • a decision made in advance about who checks on whom

Kit you can’t find, or can’t use under pressure, doesn’t help. Steady turns what you already own into a plan, and tells you the few things worth buying.

Who is behind this

Nation Preparation is an independent UK publisher run by Johnny. We are not the government and we are not an emergency service.

How we check facts: numbers and advice come from GOV.UK, Ofgem, the Met Office, the Environment Agency and NHS or Food Standards Agency pages, and we link the source. Where the government says 3 days of supplies and we suggest 7, we say so.

Spotted a mistake? Email [email protected] and we will check it and fix it.

Questions

Isn’t all this free on gov.uk?

Some of it is, and we point you to it. The government’s Be Ready guidance tells you what to have. Steady is the how: one plan for your actual household, with the UK numbers, timings and printables in one place, so you don’t have to piece together twenty websites on a bad night.

I’ve already got torches and candles.

Good start. Candles are the one thing to swap out: torches are safer. Steady helps you find the gaps: where things are kept, the numbers on paper, and who checks on whom.

Is this a scary prepper book?

No. It’s calm and practical, written for ordinary UK homes. No bunkers, no stockpiles. Where we suggest going further than the government (7 days of supplies rather than 3), we say so clearly.

Is it up to date?

It was checked against primary UK sources in October 2026, including the Met Office, Ofgem, the NHS, the Environment Agency and GOV.UK. Every chapter lists its sources.

Will I get it straight away?

Yes. You download it as soon as you’ve paid, then print what you need.
